Why Join OAO?
The Oregon Academy of Ophthalmology is the statewide professional organization representing ophthalmologists and the practice of ophthalmology in Oregon. OAO brings Oregon ophthalmologists together around two important priorities: EDUCATION and ADVOCACY. Education
- OAO provides high-quality educational opportunities designed specifically for Oregon’s ophthalmic community.
- Our annual Post Graduate Convention brings ophthalmologists and other eye care professionals together for outstanding CME, timely clinical updates and opportunities to learn from leading experts in ophthalmology.
- OAO also supports continuing education for ophthalmic technicians with our annual Eye Technician Meeting.
- OAO provides an annual coding webinar for you and your staff through AAO.
Advocacy
OAO represents Oregon ophthalmologists before legislators, regulators and other organizations whose decisions affect your patients and your practice. Working with our Legislative Committee, registered lobbyists, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Oregon Medical Association and other physician organizations, OAO monitors legislative and regulatory issues, responds to proposals affecting ophthalmology and advocates for policies that protect patient access to physician-led eye care.
OAO’s advocacy priorities include:
- Protecting appropriate scope of practice and physician-led patient care.
- Monitoring legislation and regulations affecting ophthalmologists and their practices.
- Addressing reimbursement, prior authorization and other administrative burdens.
- Protecting physicians from policies that could increase liability or unnecessarily increase the cost of practicing medicine.
- Representing the interests of Oregon ophthalmologists before state policymakers and regulatory agencies.
OAO members benefit from having a dedicated organization watching these issues year-round and responding when ophthalmology needs a voice in Salem.

Legislative & Regulatory Advocacy
OAO’s Legislative Committee, AAO Councilor, OMA Delegate and registered lobbyists work throughout the year to represent ophthalmology and protect the interests of physicians and patients.
Coding Resources
OAO members and their staff have access to AAO’s annual CODEQUEST coding webinar. Coding consultation is also available to OAO members at no charge through Casey Eye Institute. Coding questions may be sent to staff@oregoneyephysicians.org.
Resident & Fellow Mentor Dinners
OAO hosts two resident/mentor dinners per year with the goal of connecting Oregon ophthalmology residents and fellows with practicing physicians. These informal gatherings provide opportunities to discuss careers, practice settings and the many professional paths available within ophthalmology.
Professional Community
OAO connects ophthalmologists from across Oregon, providing opportunities to build relationships, exchange ideas and stay engaged with issues affecting the profession.
